Iberapa, a Key Supplier in the Reconstruction of the Power Grid After the DANA in Valencia

Following the severe damage caused by the DANA (an isolated cut-off low severe weather event) in October 2024 in Valencia—which left unprecedented destruction across the power grid, including flooded infrastructures, inundated substations, and more than 180,000 customers without supply in the first hours of the storm—Iberdrola launched the Il·lumina Plan, a €100-million investment aimed at rebuilding and modernizing the electrical network in the affected municipalities.
The objective is to transform the grid damaged by the DANA into a new-generation infrastructure, more resilient to extreme weather events and featuring a high degree of digitalization.

During the recent annual Iberdrola Supplier Awards ceremony, attended by Iberapa, the company highlighted the essential role of the strategic suppliers involved in the Il·lumina Plan and expressed its appreciation for the effort and commitment of all participating companies.

This large-scale project is progressing with the collaboration of 16 strategic suppliers, including Iberapa, which has been recognized as a key supplier. Iberapa contributes its technology and expertise in transformer substations and prefabricated medium-voltage switchgear to strengthen the grid, enhance its reliability, and accelerate its digitalization, preparing it for the future.

This large-scale project is progressing with the collaboration of 16 strategic suppliers, including Iberapa, which has been recognized as a key partner. The company contributes its technology and expertise in transformer substations and prefabricated medium-voltage switchgear to reinforce the grid, improve its reliability, and accelerate its digitalization, preparing it for the future.

Thanks to this collaboration, the new transformer substations and medium-voltage lines are equipped with safer, more compact systems designed to operate in demanding environments, providing the network with greater resilience against extreme weather events.

Iberapa thus reaffirms its commitment to Iberdrola and to the transformation of electrical networks, delivering medium-voltage solutions that drive a more robust, intelligent, and future-ready grid.

Iberapa’s Role as a Strategic Supplier

As one of Iberdrola’s 16 strategic suppliers within the Il·lumina Plan, Iberapa contributes directly to the reconstruction and modernization of the medium-voltage network in the municipalities affected by the DANA.

Our contribution focuses on our locally developed and manufactured solutions for transformer substations, including prefabricated buildings, medium-voltage switchgear, and ring main units (RMUs) for transformer substations and secondary distribution networks. These are compact, robust systems engineered for demanding environments, configurable to support network meshing, and designed to improve operational flexibility while reducing service restoration times in the event of faults or flooding.
These units are fully prepared for digitalization, with the ability to integrate remote controls, sensors, and remote monitoring systems, fully aligned with the smart grid standards driven by Iberdrola.

Thanks to this collaboration, the new transformer substations and the modern, compact infrastructures being installed are designed not only to restore what was lost, but to raise the quality and safety standards of the electricity supply in the province of Valencia for decades to come.

Looking Ahead: Rebuilding Better, Not Just Repairing

The spirit of the Il·lumina Plan is clear: it is not only about replacing what was there, but about building a network that is better prepared for the future.

Along this path, Iberapa will continue working alongside Iberdrola and the rest of the strategic suppliers to:

  • Integrate new digital functionalities into medium-voltage equipment.

  • Enhance the grid’s resilience against increasingly frequent and intense weather events.

  • Ensure a safe, high-quality electricity supply for households, industries, and essential services in the Valencian municipalities affected by the DANA.

Because behind every rebuilt transformer substation, every reinforced medium-voltage ring, and every modernized substation, there is a shared objective: to provide people and businesses in the region with a safer, more reliable, and future-ready electrical network.

We are Iberapa, we are… People on Power Solutions!
